Pin & trap (1)

You already know that pinned pieces are easy targets. They cannot move, or it is very unwise for them to do so. This makes pinned pieces powerless defenders, especially in pins against the king.

When you have created a pin and the pinned piece is defending another piece, you can strike a blow.

Study example 1 to see how this works.

You are going to learn various techniques to exploit the fact that pinned pieces have little or no power to defend. The special attacks that you have learned before are useful in this job.

In this lesson, you are going to practice trapping.

Take a look at exampe 2. This shows how a pin helps to succesfully trap and capture a rook.

What do you have to do?

Win a piece by trapping it. Make grateful use of the enemy's defending piece, that is pinned.

Follow these steps:

  1. Find the pin;
  2. Find the piece that is protected by the pinned piece;
  3. Trap this piece and capture it in the next move.
